Inner work means clearing the things inside us that block calm, joy, and freedom.
In the Michelle Method, we learn that most problems with horses are not really horse problems. They are human habits, stress patterns, and reactions we carry without realizing it. The good news is that this means change is possible.
The biggest obstacle is not your horse.
It is not your trainer.
It is not your past.
The obstacle is what we carry inside ourselves.
Over time, we all pick up habits from our life experiences. Ways of thinking. Ways of reacting. Ways of protecting ourselves. These habits show up in our thoughts, our emotions, and our bodies. Eventually, they start to feel like “just who we are.”
Horses feel these patterns clearly.
If a rider is tense inside, the horse tightens.
If a rider expects struggle, the horse often struggles.
If a rider believes things never change, progress feels stuck.
These patterns can turn into ruts. We ride the same way. We react the same way. We expect the same outcome. And we begin to believe that this is just how things are.
But it does not have to stay that way.
The Michelle Method teaches awareness first. When you slow down and notice your thoughts, your body, and your emotions, you create space for change. You begin to soften old reactions and choose new ones.
Everything you are looking for in your partnership with your horse, calm, trust, confidence, and connection, starts inside you. When you allow yourself to feel safe and grounded, your horse feels it too.
As you shift on the inside, your horse changes with you.
Your rides feel lighter.
Your communication gets clearer.
Your relationship grows stronger.
And this work reaches far beyond the barn.
You bring that same awareness into your conversations, your work, and your relationships. Life feels less heavy. You respond instead of react.
Nothing new needs to be added to you.
Nothing needs to be forced.
The peace you want is already there.
Inner work simply helps you notice it.
