Start by noticing your thoughts instead of believing them.
Your mind talks all day long. It comments on everything. Most of the time, we don’t even realize we are listening. We just follow along, like a horse on autopilot.
When you pause and watch your thoughts, something changes.
It is like stepping out of the saddle and seeing the whole horse instead of being stuck in one movement. You realize the thoughts are happening, but they are not you.
Horses teach this lesson well.
A horse might tense, rush, or spook. When we step back and observe instead of reacting, we can help them settle. We don’t take the behavior personally. We get curious.
In The Michelle Method, awareness always comes first.
We don’t fix what we don’t see. When we notice tension, we can respond with better timing, better exercises, and more patience.
The same is true for riders.
When you notice frustration, fear, or self-judgment, you create space. That space gives you a choice. You no longer have to repeat the same reactions or blame the horse or yourself.
This is a big deal.
It might feel small, but it is powerful. You are no longer stuck in old patterns. You are awake to what is actually happening.
From awareness comes compassion.
You see why you think the way you do. You understand where old habits came from. And then, gently, you can let them go.
Your true self is calm, steady, and present. The loud thoughts are just noise. Like a storm passing by while the center stays still.
When you ride from that calm place, your horse feels it. Your partnership improves. And outside the barn, you respond to life with more clarity and kindness.
Awareness is the start of all real change.
For horses.
For riders.
For life.
