The most powerful attitude you can have is gratitude.
When you practice gratitude, life feels lighter. Fear, anger, and worry lose their grip. Even small challenges don’t feel as heavy. Gratitude lets you see the good in every moment, right now, without needing things to be perfect.
Horses show us this naturally.
A horse that is relaxed and present notices everything—the feel of the ground, the swing of your leg, the breeze on its back. When we riders bring gratitude into the moment, our horses feel it too. They trust us more, move more freely, and enjoy the ride.
In The Michelle Method, we teach that awareness and presence go hand in hand with gratitude.
Take a few minutes every day to notice the little things. The way the reins feel in your hand. The sound of hooves on soft dirt. The warmth of the sun or the cool breeze on your face. When you fully notice these details, you are practicing presence.
Meditation is one way to do this. Sitting quietly and watching your thoughts helps you see that they are just passing clouds, not who you are. You notice shame, fear, or frustration without getting stuck in them. You simply observe.
But presence doesn’t have to be only during formal meditation. It can happen in everyday life.
Even in small moments—like sitting in traffic, walking to the barn, or brushing your horse—you can notice the world around you. The music playing, the birds singing, the movement of the horse under your hand. These moments become opportunities to practice gratitude and presence.
The more you practice, the more natural it becomes. You start responding instead of reacting. You stop letting old habits of frustration or impatience control you. You see life clearly. You see your horse clearly.
This inner work changes everything.
Your horse feels calmer and more willing. Your partnership improves. And your life outside the barn becomes more peaceful, joyful, and meaningful.
Gratitude is not just a feeling—it is a way of being. And it starts with simple, present moments you notice right now.
